So last night I went out and decided to get a little adventurous with my Moroccan pallet. (Much to the urging of a really cool 6 year old
)
I went out with Jo, Carissa, Maria and Naomi from the hostel and had a regular meal of fresh fish, fried with a grilled chili pepper, chips, bread and obergene sauce. Then came the fun part!
First:
Snails (escargot) in a very salty, spicy type broth:
Then the coup de grace was the………
Sheeps Brain (& tongue)![]()

All the heads lined up:
It was suprisingly good, the tongue was similar to a fatty version of dark turkey meat. All in all pretty tasty. The brain was interesting, but also much better than I had imagined. It was boiled, like the tongue, so it had a very smooth texture, not slimy at all, and was very creamy and rich in flavor. I’ve certainly eaten worse. (seriously, has anyone ever eaten at Cleary’s?)
So I successfully tried a bunch of new things, got some repectful nods from the Moroccan diners for trying the “real stuff” and grossed out my british companions (yet, whose cuisine has a dish called “spotted dick”) all in one night. Not a bad time, if I say so myself.
Leave some comments, let me know what you think.
No, I’m not now dying from eating weird stuff. I will def not be able to give blood back in the states now though. Between beef in Ireland and Antigua, and brains in Morocco, tattoos in the States, the Red Cross will be tossing me out the back door if I even try!
Hope everyone is having a good summer!
John
PS — As always, you can click on the photos for a BIGGER version. (Just so you can clearly see all the poor sheep’s synapses that I gobbled down.)
And one last of the smokey market food stalls:
